“It has been fun to see Barrett’s growth from only a couple of people and one building to over 400 and three buildings! My story with Barrett started when I got a call from a friend 14 years ago asking if I could lend her a hand sorting pet food. After that, Sarah Barrett would call to see if I would help and I was always willing to do what she needed. When I first started, I was fascinated with all the ingredients that went into the product including blueberries, apples, carrots, cranberries, etc. I was also always excited to take some food home for my own dogs and cats to sample! Back then, we ran a lot of trials and what we did not use was given to the local humane society. The Barretts also like to do things outside of work with the team, and I love to cook for the team, so it works out for us both. We are still growing, I still love it here, and I am not going anywhere.”

Family is very important to them.

“I like how the Barretts treat you like family. If you have something come up with your family they are very understanding because they have kids of their own, and family is very important to them. It is interesting to watch from where we started to where we are today from the product we put out, to the people, to the building. When I started in 2015, there were 3 machines in packaging, 1 wrapper, and only 5 of us. We used to assemble boxes, so we had them for the next day, because we did not have a boxer at that time. We were that small. Today, everything is updated and runs faster so we are able to get a lot of product out. Everything was really manual back then compared to what it is today. Even though we have grown, it is still really close knit, and typically when you grow not everyone is still this close. Everyone here seems to work together, and everyone is still like family.”

“I started on November 7th, 2016, in the maintenance department where we had 4 packaging lines and 1 extruder. I worked a year in maintenance and learned the machines, helped out in safety, and then I was asked to become the Packaging Manager in 2018. We now have 7 lines in Brainerd and 7 in Little Falls that I helped design by doing research and continual learning. I realized I really enjoyed designing and programming equipment, so I am now the Senior Process Engineer. I could not be prouder to have grown with the company and strive to be the best for Barrett Petfood. Something I really like now is hearing automation feedback from the packaging team and teaching them how to program their lines to make them the best they can be and see what they can do.
